Conference Theme:
Sankɔfa: Reclaiming Ancestral Memory

African people stand at a crossroads. The western paradigm has not only brought profound suffering upon African people—it has also decimated the balance of the natural world. As our ancestor Jacob H. Carruthers has said, “the world order which was created under the metaphysics of alienation has begun to destroy the world.” This crisis compels African people not only to establish global African sovereignty, but ultimately to restore Maat in the world. Key to this process is the reclamation of the ways of our ancestors as exemplified by the Akan term Sankɔfa, which reminds us to recover that which we have lost. It is in this matrix of ancestral wisdom, indeed the African worldview, which represents both the central basis of African life and consciousness, as well as the “deep well” which holds to promise to renew the African world.

Join us for this year’s conference of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations Midwest Region as we explore the importance of cultural reclamation to the concretization of African sovereignty, and beyond this, to its transformation.

We invite presentations that address the theme, and more generally explore the process and imperative of Sankɔfa, African ancestral memory, and African transformation in the world.
